What is an Absolute Eosinophil Count (AEC) Test?
The AEC test determines a patient's eosinophil, that is, a type of white blood cell, count in a given blood sample. Eosinophils are part of the immune system and are important in managing allergic responses and parasitic infections. The Eosinophil Test is done as part of the investigation for asthma, allergic rhinitis, eosinophilic esophagitis and some parasitic infections.
Certain autoimmune disorders, some skin diseases, and certain malignancies of blood, may also yeild increased levels of eosinophils. AEC test helps with identofication and evaluation of outcome and progression of these disorders.
What is an Absolute Eosinophil Count (AEC) Report Format?
An AEC report indicates the level of eosinophils and highlights if the levels fall within normal range or is abnormal. Such AEC reports aids in evaluation of allergic conditions, parasitic diseases and some hematological malignancies.
The report format typically includes:
Patient Information : Name, age, sex, and relevant medical history.
Test Name : Absolute Eosinophil Count (AEC).
Test Results : The absolute number of eosinophils in a given volume of blood (usually expressed in cells per microliter or cells per liter).
Reference Ranges : Normal eosinophil count ranges for comparison.
Interpretation : Physician’s comments based on the test results.
Remarks : Additional notes, such as the need for further tests or treatments.

Part
Description
Eosinophil Count (AEC)
The test result showing the absolute number of eosinophils in the blood, measured in cells/µL or cells/L.
Test Results
Displays the actual value of eosinophil count in the patient’s blood sample.
Reference Ranges
The normal range of eosinophil count for comparison.
Interpretation
Commentary on whether the eosinophil count is normal or abnormal and what it implies about the patient’s health.

Parameters to Consider in an Absolute Eosinophil Count (AEC) Report
Parameter
Interpretation
Eosinophil Count (AEC)
Elevated Eosinophils : Can indicate allergic reactions, parasitic infections, autoimmune diseases, or certain types of cancer.
Low Eosinophils : Generally of no concern but could indicate a compromised immune response or use of corticosteroids.
Absolute Eosinophil Count (AEC) Report Format Guidelines
Ensure that the report includes the absolute eosinophil count result along with reference ranges for comparison.
The test results should be clearly marked as "Normal" or "Abnormal," with an explanation if abnormal results are present.
The interpretation should explain whether the eosinophil count is within normal limits or suggests a specific condition such as allergies, parasitic infections, or an autoimmune disorder.
Additional remarks may include recommendations for follow-up tests or treatments based on the eosinophil count results.
Tables should be used to clearly display test results, reference ranges, and interpretations.
Include patient details and medical history for context, especially if abnormal results are found.
What Do the Results Imply?
Elevated Eosinophils : A high eosinophil count may indicate allergic conditions (such as asthma, rhinitis, or eczema), parasitic infections (like hookworm or malaria), or autoimmune diseases. It can also be a marker for certain cancers such as Hodgkin's lymphoma or eosinophilic leukemia.
Normal Eosinophil Count : A normal eosinophil count typically indicates no active allergic reactions, parasitic infections, or eosinophilic disorders. This suggests that the immune system is functioning properly in this aspect.
Low Eosinophils : While generally not a cause for concern, low eosinophil levels could indicate conditions such as Cushing’s syndrome, the use of corticosteroid medications, or a weakened immune system.
Elevated : May suggest allergic reactions, parasitic infections, autoimmune diseases, or hematologic disorders such as eosinophilic leukemia.
Normal : Indicates no active allergic reaction, parasitic infection, or eosinophilic disorder.
Low : May indicate corticosteroid use or other factors affecting immune response.
